Inspired by Justin Wadlington is a 48 x 60 acrylic painting on canvas, created in 2025, that brings together two well-known public artworks in New York City: Fearless Girl by Kristen Visbal and Grounded in the Stars by Thomas J Price. Through this work, Wadlington highlights the power, presence, and quiet strength these figures represent.
Fearless Girl, originally installed near Wall Street’s Charging Bull in 2017, became a global symbol of gender equality and leadership. In 2018, following public debate and permit issues, the statue was moved to its current location across from the New York Stock Exchange. Grounded in the Stars, now on view in Times Square, is a 12-foot bronze sculpture of a fictional young Black woman by artist Thomas J Price. The work is intended to “combat any preconceived notions of identity and representation,” and is positioned at street level to engage the public directly.
In Inspired, these two figures appear not in opposition but in conversation—with one another standing in the heart of Time Square. Wadlington reminds us that true strength can be quiet, grounded, and shared.
As part of The New York 400 Years Celebration at Gracie Mansion, Inspired will be the first in a series from Wadlington’s newest collection of paintings honoring New York City. The work will be on view in August 2025 at the official residence of the city’s mayor. Each painting in the series tells a story—Wadlington underscores this by placing “The End” in the bottom right corner of every piece, a signature that invites viewers to reflect on the narrative within. Inspired calls attention to the vital role public art plays in shaping and reflecting New York City’s rich history.
